Are dietary supplements your allies?

Chewable vitamin C, magnesium drops or even collagen powder, food supplements are now sold by the millions and now fill our drawers! Under their promises of energy, youth and beauty, are they really effective? Can they be dangerous for our health?

Food supplement: what is it?

The food supplement is a substance highly concentrated in minerals, vitamins or plants, aimed at optimizing our abilities, strengthening our well-being or fighting against a potential deficiency, as part of a balanced diet.  

Eating a balanced diet should normally be enough to meet our intake of essential nutrients: in reality, it's not that simple! Some vitamins and minerals are difficult to find in our modern diet. To obtain our daily intake and depending on the nutrients sought, we should consume a very large quantity of these foods! This is the case for magnesium, for example. 66% of adults are below 2/3 of the ANC (Recommended Nutritional Intakes). 

How to consume food supplements correctly?

Intensive sporting activity, menopause, temporary stress, a skin problem, or even a change of season can be a good reason to take supplements to give your body a real boost. In order to consume food supplements safely and make the most of their positive effects, consider:

  • Read the labels carefully and check: the composition, the percentage of ingredients contained in relation to the RDA (recommended daily allowance). Some supplements actually contain very few of the nutrients advertised on the box and are therefore completely ineffective!

  • Follow the instructions for use (daily quantity, duration, time of intake, etc.)

  • Preferably choose organic brands, manufactured and/or controlled in France

  • Pay attention to the possible interaction with other medications (this is the case for example with grapefruit seed which reduces the effect of certain treatments)

With the hundreds of food supplements available, you don't know what to choose? Ask your pharmacist or herbalist for advice. Another solution, do an online diagnosis (dozens of brands create tailor-made programs for you and send the products directly to your home!
