Investing in a laser hair removal machine in 2026: the right time or the wrong bet?
If you're reading these lines, the question has probably been on your mind for a while. Permanent hair removal appeals to your clients, demand seems endless… but the investment itself makes you hesitate… And in today's economic climate, it can be difficult to know whether you're making a decision for the future or taking one risk too many.
Take a breath. We're going to break it all down together, backed by official figures and without sugar-coating anything. The goal: for you to finish this article with a clear vision, not with yet another sales pitch.
After the excitement that followed the regulatory opening in 2024, growth in France is now beginning to normalise. There is nothing worrying about that — quite the opposite. It is the sign of a market moving from the excitement of its early days towards a calmer, more mature dynamic. The first waves of equipment purchases, driven by enthusiasm around the change in legislation, are giving way to more considered decisions, with each professional taking the time to build a genuine project. And honestly, that is rather good news: it professionalises the sector and rewards those who invest intelligently.
Demand for treatments, meanwhile, shows no sign of slowing down.
The beauty sector in France represents an estimated overall turnover of €6.8 billion in 2024, according to the CNAIB Beauty Industry Report. Hair removal remains by far the leading service: around 20% of beauty treatment activity is focused on hair removal, ahead of facial and body treatments. In other words, hair is still the driving force of the profession! And no economic climate has dethroned it.
Here is the reassuring paradox: while the equipment market becomes more structured, clients are increasingly asking for laser hair removal. Why? Because when budgets are tight, consumers tend to prioritise long-lasting solutions rather than recurring expenses. Permanent hair removal is also an investment for the client: she stops paying for waxing every month.
The underlying trends are strong. Across Europe, demand for non-invasive aesthetic procedures has increased significantly in recent years. And this dynamic no longer concerns women alone: demand for male treatments has grown considerably, with men now representing a significant proportion of procedures performed. An entire new segment of clientele is opening up to you.
Another strong signal: the beauty salons performing best are not those cutting prices, but those moving upmarket, as Bpifrance Création points out. The businesses that stand out focus on specialisation, advanced treatments, equipment, expertise and client loyalty rather than competing on price. Translation: investing in professional technology is precisely the winning strategy in 2026.
It is impossible to discuss laser investment without returning to the regulatory turning point. For decades, laser hair removal was restricted: the regulations were based on the Order of 6 January 1962 establishing the list of medical procedures that could only be performed by doctors.
Everything changed with Decree No. 2024-470 of 24 May 2024, which ended the medical monopoly: in addition to doctors, nurses and beauty professionals may now perform permanent hair removal procedures, provided that they complete the required training. In practical terms, three categories of professionals are authorised: doctors, state-registered nurses, and qualified beauty professionals or people working under their effective and permanent supervision.
And here is the information many people still do not know, the point that should remove your final concerns: this framework is now legally secure. The French Conseil d'État, which was asked to annul the decree, rejected the application in a decision dated 12 March 2026, considering that the restrictions were justified by the protection of public health. The legal uncertainty is over: investing today means investing in a legally secured market.
The decree does not simply open the door; it sets rules, and that is a good thing because it professionalises the sector and keeps amateurs out. The Order of 19 February 2025 specifies the requirements for the training: common theoretical foundation training, a practical section specific to each technique, and mandatory first-aid training for beauty professionals. There are also obligations relating to client information, contraindication checks and assessment of the client's phototype before the first session.
This is the key issue. A professional laser represents a significant investment, and that needs to be said clearly. But let's look at the economics, because they are particularly favourable.
Why is profitability so attractive? Because the model is based on an amortised fixed cost and a high margin per session. Once the machine has been purchased and the training validated, each treatment generates a significant margin, with consumables and machine time remaining low compared with the selling price of a session. And because permanent hair removal requires several sessions spaced over time, each client becomes a source of recurring revenue over several months, with a naturally high retention rate.
This is also why clinics and aesthetic centres now capture most of the market's value: professionals managing recurring treatments transform each piece of equipment into a long-term source of revenue.
Here are the genuine obstacles you may encounter and why none of them is impossible to overcome.
None of these challenges is impossible to overcome. They can all be addressed with the right preparation and the right partner!
It cannot be repeated enough: the best laser is the one that meets your actual needs and will perform reliably over time. Here are the criteria to examine carefully before committing.

Yes. The equipment market is becoming more structured after the 2024 peak, but demand for permanent hair removal treatments remains very strong and continues to grow. Hair removal represents around 20% of beauty treatment activity in France. The economic model — high margins per session and recurring clients — remains one of the most profitable in the beauty sector.
Yes, since Decree No. 2024-470 of 24 May 2024 ended the medical monopoly. Qualified beauty professionals and state-registered nurses may perform laser hair removal for non-therapeutic purposes, provided they complete the mandatory training defined by the Order of 19 February 2025. This legal framework was upheld by the Conseil d'État on 12 March 2026.
Choose equipment suited to your clientele and phototypes, robust and reliable, preferably manufactured in France for traceability and quality, with responsive after-sales service and available spare parts, as well as a lightweight and ergonomic handpiece. An initial audit of your activity is the best way to make the right choice.
Several solutions exist: leasing, finance leasing, lease with purchase option and professional loans. These solutions spread the investment over several years, allowing the machine to partly finance itself through the turnover it generates while preserving your cash flow.
The timeframe varies depending on your activity volume, pricing and occupancy rate. Profitability is based on client retention: because permanent hair removal requires several sessions, each client generates recurring revenue over several months. Support at the planning stage makes it possible to establish a realistic projection.
